City of Cape Town fire fighters safely deliver a little festive surprise
City of Cape Town’s Goodwood fire fighters sprang into action when a vehicle pulled up with a woman in labour on Friday, 11 December 2020. City fire fighters don’t get called on too often to help deliver babies but on Friday the crew from Goodwood helped to deliver a little Christmas cheer to a couple in need. “I often boast that our fire fighters are ready for everything, especially with the summer season in full swing but this time around they were ready to help deliver a baby. At around 11h35 a vehicle stopped in front of the Goodwood Fire Station with a harried gentleman who told fire fighters on duty his wife was in labour and needed help. Senior fire fighter Denzil Benny assessed the situation and saw the baby was already crowning. He and fire fighter Jacques Swanepoel then helped the mother deliver a healthy baby boy just 10 minutes after the couple had pulled up. The parents were quite surprised as they were told to expect a baby girl,’ explained Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith. The baby's vitals were taken and the parents made their way to a hospital. “Recently another team of fire fighters helped a mother deliver a baby on the roof of a house. These men and women do their uniform proud by going the extra mile for the communities they serve,” said Alderman Smith.
