Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) South Africa holds first online webinar and AGM
The Institution of Fire Engineers (SA) held its 2020 annual general meeting (AGM), seminar and workshops on
10 and 11 September 2020. The event was held online for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and was themed ‘Fire behaviour ... can we manage it?’. After a warm welcome from outgoing president, Mike Webber, he introduced Chief Bruce Varner, international president for the Institution of Fire Engineers. Chief Varner was the fire chief of Santa Rosa, California, prior to his retirement. Webber, in his president’s address, reflected on the institution activities of the past few months. “Notwithstanding the effects of the global economic meltdown, climate change, large-scale catastrophes and now the Corona virus pandemic, I cannot help but feel a sense of pride in the role, developments and achievements that are being made by our local branch of the IFE” said Webber. Andrew Greig delivered the secretary and treasurer’s report after which Alex Gloster delivered the incoming president’s address in which he said in light of the recent major disasters around the globe, “I believe that it is incumbent on the risk and engineering sectors to increase the level of awareness and the standard of protection against these possible events, to protect against more of these previously considered improbable events. This branch stands us in good stead to address these risks in conjunction and consultation with all roles players.”
Andrew Greig shared an overview of his attendance as the IFE SA representative of the IFE’s International General Assembly (IGA) meeting that took place in February 2020.
