Historic building in central Cape Town gutted by fire
An historic three-storey building in central Cape Town was gutted by fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 2 December 2020. The building, Namaqua Trading cc, is situated near Cape Town Central Police Station and opposite the District Six Museum. “The alarm was raised at 01h00am of a building alight in Albertus Street in Cape Town’s central business district. We responded with 17 fire fighting appliances and 70 staff members with a motor pump and hydraulic platform from Roeland Street Fire Station; a motor pump, water tanker and rescue vehicle from Milnerton and motor pumps from Sea Point, Salt River, Brooklyn, Wynberg, Lakeside, Melkbos, Brackenfell, Belhar and Epping fire stations. Bellville responded with a motor pump and a hazmat vehicle, Goodwood Fire Station with a motor pump and hydraulic platform and Ottery with a rescue vehicle”, said Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service. “The fire was contained at approximately 06h00 and relief crews were dispatched. Crews managed to prevent the spread of fire to the adjacent art gallery. The building was completely gutted. The building has been deemed unsafe and a building inspector has been requested to ascertain the structural integrity of the premises. No one was injured in the fire," said Carelse.
