ETS Industrial Emergency Response Team Competition 2021
The ETS Industrial Emergency Response Team Competition 2021 took place on Thursday, 30 September 2021, at ETS’ training facility in Redan, Gauteng. ETS have been hosting these competitions for approximately 21 years and at times there were up to three events per year, albeit on a smaller scale, it still required the same level of commitment to success. 17 teams from all over South Africa took part in this year’s event, which included the main scenario, the toughest fire team event and a rope and knot skills event. This year’s competition comprised of four events, namely a quiz, a test of fire fighter individual skills, a test of fire fighter physical skills and abilities in the toughest fire team event and a simulated fire scenario.
The quiz is a quick fire test of cerebral fortitude, where teams are allowed to work together to answer 20 multiple choice questions testing basic fire and first aid knowledge given only 10 minutes.
Individual skills: Knot making ability
Team members were given tasks that involved knowing and applying knots taught in Fire Fighter 1.
Toughest Fire Team
Team members participated in a relay event testing there physical speed, ability and stamina in tasks closely assimilated to those found on the fireground.
Six team members participate in this event, which involved at least one fire and one victim who has been injured. This event tested the ability of a small team of six (including the team leader) to use their resourcefulness to resolve a simulated industrial incident. Three assessors judged this event, assessing the team leader as well as the teams’ fireground safety and performance.
The results are:
Best Team Leader: Sappi Saiccor
1st Sappi Saiccor
2nd Sappi Ndogwana
3rd Sappi Lomati

“The event created the opportunity for like-minded, passionate fire fighters to experience a non-life threatening, and dare I say, even fun aspect of competitions. It was a time for employers to show their appreciation to their teams whilst getting to know others in the industry. Relationships were either formed or strengthened and bonds forged with team members”, said ETS directors, Dirk Möller and John Akal. “We want to say a special thanks to Pinkie Matjeke for being so flexible, dedicated and focussed.”
Congratulations to all the competitors for their enthusiasm, camaraderie and zest!
