ANCO’s locally produced CAF system continues to exceed expectations
The locally manufactured and supported ANCO CAFS300 Compressed Air Foam System from ANCO Manufacturing has been firmly established as a serious solution to fire fighting operations in Southern Africa and abroad. Traditional CAFS units that have been available from the USA and Europe still have their place in the fire fighting arsenal but the lack of a simplified, basic yet highly effective system has now been addressed. From the outset, the ANCO CAFS300 system was designed for tough, local conditions while keeping operational requirements such as ease of activation/start-up, simplified and mechanical foam concentrate mixing ratios and un-complicated componentry for easier maintenance in mind. The team at ANCO adapted existing technology into an easy to use but very effective, 100 percent South African, mini CAFS system.
CAFS is an acronym used for “Compressed Air Foam System” and is a system used to deliver a highly effective fire retardant foam onto a fire and is one of the most effective methods to suppress fires. A typical CAF-System uses a Class A foaming chemical concentrate on carbon based fuelloads (Class B for petro-chemical fires), combined with water and compressed air at exact ratios, to create a continuous supply of fire extinguishing foam. The foam consists of multiple bubble structures that each has far superior heat absorption properties compared to individual water droplets. Due to the foam solution consisting of approximately 10 percent water (the balance made up of air and foaming chemical) the further advantage of CAF is the optimised used of water on the carrier vehicle. Fire fighters can effectively multiply their available water on wheels with a factor of 10 to extend time at the fire while having the added advantage of a highly effective fire suppression medium coming through the hose. The ANCO CAFS300 produces a steady stream of compressed air foam that has been proven to be more effective in direct fire suppression compared to water-only applications and also in establishing pre-burn wet-lines that remain effective for longer. Other advantages include a huge reduction in water damage on structural fires when using CAF and a dramatic reduction in hose-weight allowing a single fireman to manipulate and control multiple lengths of lay-flat hose that would require multiple crew members when using water only. The ANCO CAFS300 has been extensively proven in wildfire conditions with corporate forestry users and in structural and industrial fire fighting applications and industry feed-back has been positive and exciting.
The ANCO CAFS300 can be installed onto almost any fire fighting vehicle platform, even onto a standard single cab, LWB bakkie. Two variants of the self-contained machine are available; a petrol engine driven model and a hydraulic driven model. Both models offer the same performance in terms of foam delivery with the petrol engine derivative being more suited to installation on smaller carrier vehicles while the hydraulic driven model is more suited for installation on truck platforms with power take off (PTO)/hydraulic drive systems.
Many hours of development, pre-production experimentation, burn testing and real-life deployments have enabled the ANCO team to offer another tried and tested product at a very cost effective price that will assist fire fighters in dealing with the huge challenges they face every day.
