11 killed in horror head-on collision in Limpopo

Eleven people have been killed in a car crash outside Polokwane in Limpopo.  According to Seabi Joel, spokesperson for transport MEC Dickson Masemola, the accident took place just after 6h00 on Sunday, 22 September 2019. Two vehicles, an Isuzu bakkie and an FAW Sirius S80 SUV, were involved in a head-on collision on the R37 between Polokwane and Lebowakgomo, he said.  Some of the deceased were found more than 20 metres from the immediate scene in the surrounding bushes.  It is unclear what caused the accident, Joel said.  He added that it remains unclear whether there were any pedestrians involved, citing that the carrying capacity of the vehicles amounted to fewer than the number of deceased.

Investigations are currently under way and authorities are in the process of identifying the bodies, Joel said. Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) Senior Crash Investigators were on scene as well as South African Police Services and Limpopo Provincial Traffic authorities.

"The MEC was on the scene this morning and has extended his condolences to the families of the deceased," said Joel.
