Gladstone Airport's new $9,2 million aviation rescue fire station has been officially opened on 8 December 2014. A continued increase in passengers at Gladstone Airport prompted Airservices Australia to construct a new fire station to ensure capability kept pace with the demands of growth in aviation and to provide an added layer of safety to airport users. A Category 6 airport, Gladstone Airport is located 8km west of the town of Gladstone in Queensland, Australia. The fire station sees the introduction of a new aviation fire service at Gladstone, providing an added layer of safety to all users of the airport.
Based on a modular, standardised design, the new fire station is staffed by 19 firefighters and features two vehicle bays and a maintenance workshop to house and maintain three ultra-large fire vehicles.
A state-of-the-art Fire Control Centre is located in the station’s observation tower overlooking the airport, equipped with the latest communications and monitoring technology.
St Hilliers was appointed the contractor for the design and construction of the ARFF Fire Station at Gladstone QLD.
Key to St Hilliers selection was our innovative approach to design to achieve the requirements of the brief.
The new ARFF facilities are modular in nature, allowing them to be dismantled, transported and reassembled at other sites if required. The scope involved:
Senior fire commander Greg Hunt in August said the Gladstone facility was unique with its access to the airstrip on one side and the entrance on Callemondah Drive. "I have never seen such a good job done straight up on a facility like this," he said.
The government-owned Airservices Australia station and crew were paid for through landing charges.
ARFF Gladstone began operations on 22 August 2014 to meet the growing needs of the aviation industry.

- Initial civil and ground works including footings and foundations as well as the in-ground services and complete installation of the concrete slabs.
- The manufacture of the modular and flat pack building components in Brisbane and then transport of these components to site.
- The erection and construction of these components on site and then the fit-out and installation of minor services
- External works including the pavements, wash down bays, fuel, foam hazardous storage tanks and landscaping.
