New WHO prehospital emergency care (ambulance) guidance and maternal and newborn health
This webinar, hosted by the Transport and Referral Community of Practice, will give an overview of the prehospital guidance and discuss its potential to help reduce maternal and newborn mortality and stillbirths. Prehospital emergency care – and between hospital care - for critically ill and injured people is a vital part of a functional health system, enabling for system to medical, surgical and obstetric emergencies. Good quality emergency care, especially for women and newborns, has the potential to contribute to saving millions of mothers and newborn lives and preventing stillbirths. However, in many countries, prehospital care and emergency transport lack proper regulation, coordination, trained staff, and equipment, leading to poor emergency care. This month, WHO published the “Prehospital emergency care - operational guidance for ambulance systems”, a set of standardised frameworks and protocols to improve access to quality emergency care. These updated prehospital guidance offer advice for countries on how to strengthen emergency systems by addressing common gaps in governance, training, equipment, communication, and quality across all resource settings.

Speakers: Professor Lee Alan Wallis
Professor Lee Alan Wallis is Lead: Emergency and Critical Care at WHO Headquarters, Geneva.
Before taking up this post he was Head of Emergency Medicine for the Western Cape Government, and Professor and Head of the Division of Emergency Medicine at both the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University, South Africa.
Dr Lee Wallis has been President of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine and was the Founder and President of the African Federation for Emergency Medicine. He was Editor-in-Chief of the African Journal of Emergency Medicine, edited several books and has published around 350 journal articles.
