Major truck accident in Mokopane claims six lives
Six people died and one was critically injured after a multiple-vehicle crash in Mokopane, previously Potgietersrus, in Limpopo on Wednesday night, 2 December 2020. According to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, the crash involved a truck, five sedans and several pedestrians. It is alleged that the truck failed to brake at the corner of Thabo Mbeki and Retief streets and then crashed into five vehicles in front. It is further alleged that the driver lost control of the vehicle and knocked and killed four pedestrians before crashing into a bank building. The vehicles and the building caught fire after the impact. The truck driver and the passenger were burnt to death in the truck and one person from a burnt sedan was rushed to a nearby hospital after escaping with serious injuries.
The Mogalakwena Local Municipality’s statement read, “A truck carrying lime plunged inside a bank on the corner of Retief and Thabo Mbeki roads in Mokopane. According to the information received at the scene the truck which was heading to the South direction lost control and plunged in the nearest bank. Five cars (sedans) were involved in the accident as the truck driver lost control, other drivers were rushed to hospital while and one driver in a sedan was burnt beyond recognition. It is not yet known what could have caused the accident.
