Man rescued after being trapped in storm water drain for 18 hours, Ekurhuleni
A Gauteng man has been rescued from a storm water drain after being trapped for more than 18 hours on Monday 7 February 2022. The man was found in the drain alongside the N12 freeway just before the Voortrekker Road off-ramp in Alberton, said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison at Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS). The 56-year-old man fell into the drain on Sunday at around 22h00. He told emergency services workers that he had not seen the drain in the dark while walking in tall grass. The incident was reported on Monday afternoon when another man heard him calling for help from the drain. "On inspection, following where the voice was coming from, he discovered the patient," said Ntladi.
"Rescuers from Alberton were notified and responded swiftly to the scene. An adult male patient was reported to be trapped inside the storm water drain system. Rescue technicians recovered the patient, who was still conscious and responding positively. The patient was recovered at 16h30. He sustained a left leg fracture. He was treated on scene by paramedics and transported to the nearest medical facility”, added Ntladi.
