Fire at Wellington dumpsite extinguished
A dump site caught alight on Wednesday, 3 February 2021 in Wellington, Western Cape. Dereck Peceur, head for Fire and Rescue Services Operations at Drakenstein Fire and Rescue Service said, “We responded to a dumpsite fire in Wellington after receiving a call at Called received Wednesday at 14h16. Wellington Fire Station attended to the call with assistance from Cape Winelands District Municipality and Drakenstein Farm Watch. The terrain posed a risk and a bulldozer as well as an excavator was used . The earthmoving machinery was used to open certain areas and to cover other with sand. Other than that, water lines from the hydrant were used to sustain fire fighting activities on the site. The incident was closed off on Saturday at 19h00. One fire fighter suffered smoke inhalation for which he was treated. Hospitalisation was not required. Challenges faced included accessibility and the ability to drive on the site. Being a dumpsite, some areas could not be accessed. Smoke being given off caused concerns and discomfort to residents for portions of the incident. Due to the excessive heat experienced in the valley, staff had to be rotated frequently on site.”
