On duty City of Windhoek firefighter dies in collision, Namibia

The City of Windhoek remembered emergency worker who died on duty on Sunday 7 July 2024 in Windhoek, Namibia.
Firefighter Methusalah Simataa Khama was driving with a colleague in an ambulance when it crashed into a truck. City of Windhoek spokesperson, Lydia Amutenya, who confirmed the accident, said the two emergency workers were returning from a call at the Katutura Intermediate Hospital to Maxuilili Fire Station when the incident took place at around 07h27 on Hosea Kutako Drive in the Northern Industry area.
She said a City of Windhoek Rescue Team was dispatched from Headquarters and promptly arrived on scene. The victims were removed from the wreckage and advanced medical treatment was administered following established protocols. However, despite the immediate and advanced medical efforts by the rescue team and due to the nature of the impact and the severity of injuries, Firefighter Khama succumbed to his injuries. The other victim was admitted to a hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The following message of condolences was received from the City of Windhoek and the Windhoek Fire Department.
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our colleague, Methusalah Simataa Khama, on 7 July 2024.
Khama Simataa joined the City of Windhoek as Trainee Firefighter on 3 March 2008. He was subsequently promoted to the position of Firefighter on 1 March 2009, a position he held until his passing.
He will be remembered fondly as a dedicated team player, known for his friendly demeanour, respectfulness and strong work ethic. Khama Simataa possessed a gentle soul, often seen with a smile, sharing jokes and always ready to lend a helping hand.
Khama Simataa’s departure is a great loss to the City of Windhoek and he will be deeply missed by all of us.
We extend our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy to the family of our late firefighter during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
