Tzaneen loses well-known spotter pilot in aircraft crash
Siem Venter, a well-known Tzaneen resident and pilot at the Letaba Fire Protection Association (LFPA), died on Thursday morning, 4 March 2021, when his aircraft crashed near Swadini in the Mariep'skop Mountain in the Hoedspruit region. LFPA’s public relations officer, Maritza Swanepoel, said that they were saddened to learn of 64-year-old Siem’s death. He worked at LFPA for the last 15 years and spent many years on the front line of some of the Eastern Cape's worst blazes. It is not known at this stage what the circumstances of the crash were. The Letaba Fire Protection Association posted on Facebook, “For the past fifteen years we worked together, we joked together, we fought fires together and sometimes we agreed to disagree. It was only a pleasure working with a pilot who knew the area, who knew the weather and the wind and topography. It was an honour knowing someone who knew so many jokes and every last one of them was funny. Stand down, Bravo 1.”
Fire and Rescue International share our deepest condolences with Siem’s family, colleagues and friends. Rest in Peace, Siem. Source: Maritza Swanepoel, public relations officer, Letaba Fire Protection Association (LFPA) |
