Fire stations of the world: Freiwillige Feuerwehr Bairisch Kölldorf, Austria
Freiwillige Feuerwehr Bairisch Kölldorf in Austria has most possibly the most unique fire station in the world. This unusual fire station, which is built to look and act as a massive fire engine, was opened on 26 May 2002. Construction of the somewhat different fire station began on 6 December 2000 and around 3 600 hours of unpaid volunteer work. They call it "The biggest Fire Truck of the world". It is a normal brick and concrete building, only the exterior design is in the form of a fire fighting vehicle. In addition to the three apparatus spaces, the station also offers enough storage space for equipment.
The building is a simple hall construction without an expensive roof structure, a simple but functional building. All things such as the bumpers, mirrors, blue lights, fender tyres, indicators and ladders are self-made and functional.
Mostly local companies were used in the construction. The fire station is always ready for guided tours. The dimensions of the building are: length 25,4m, width 12m, height 6,3m and tower height 14,5m. The voluntary fire brigade Bairisch Kölldorf was founded in 1929 with 53 men. The current team consists of 102 men and 14 women.
Current apparatus in the station include an HLF2 rescue vehicle, BLFA mountain fire fighting vehicle and a MTF team transport vehicle.
The “fire engine” has working turning signals (indicators), blue lights, headlights and windshield wipers of the over 25 metres long, is more than six metres in height and weighs 250 tons. The three wheels embedded in the facade are originals that come from an excavator.
At the stern there is a hose tower that looks like a ladder on which a fire fighter stands and can sprays with a nozzle. The over three-metre tall fire fighter on the ladder rises every day at 11h45am in summer and splashes water over the roof.
Bairisch Kölldorf is a former municipality in the district of Südoststeiermark in the Austrian state of Styria and has a population of 1 065. Since the 2015 Styria municipal structural reform, it is part of the municipality Bad Gleichenberg.
