eThekwini firefighters receive world-class training to combat complex emergencies
To elevate its emergency response and to ensure public safety, eThekwini Municipality’s Fire Services Directorate completed a high-impact Advanced Breathing Apparatus Training Course, empowering firefighters with world-class skills to tackle complex emergencies. This intensive training aligns with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1404, whose principles and practises are internationally-recognised. They ensure firefighters are fully equipped to operate safely in hazardous environments.
The course focused on advanced fire dynamics, hazard assessment, and rescue operations, skills essential for reducing casualties and protecting property.
As eThekwini faces an increase in fire incidents, particularly in fire-prone informal settlements and high-density areas, this training is a timely and strategic intervention. Firefighters are now better prepared to respond to emergencies involving hazardous materials, structural collapses, and evolving fire behaviours.
Principal Training Officer Rodgers Vilakazi said the training marks a turning point in how the Municipality prepares teams for the realities of modern firefighting.
“It transforms our firefighters into highly skilled, confident professionals capable of navigating the most dangerous environments in order to save lives,” he said.
He added that this move has elevated the City’s firefighter’s ability to assess risks, make life-saving decisions, and adapt to emergencies involving hazardous materials, structural collapses, and digital threats.
“This approach transforms, not just the firefighter, but the entire emergency response landscape,” said Vilakazi.
The course combined theory with live demonstrations, where firefighters showcased their ability to perform vehicle extrications, navigate smoke-filled structures, and use digital tools for learning and simulation.
These exercises reflect the department’s readiness to meet the demands of a rapidly changing emergency landscape.
The Municipality emphasised the critical role of communities in fire risk prevention.
Residents are encouraged to practice fire safety, report hazards, and to participate in awareness campaigns. Together, the Municipality and its residents can build a culture of resilience and prevention.
Vilakazi emphasised that fire safety starts at home.
“When communities are informed and involved, we can significantly reduce fire risks across the City,” he said.
