Fire stations of the world: Paw Paw Fire Department new fire station opened in 2023, Michigan, US

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held for the new 20 000 square foot fire station that had been in the works since 2012 on Saturday, 20 May 2023. The new station is almost twice as big as the old fire station, which was built in 1974. Voters approved nearly $6 million to build the new station in 2021. Paw Paw Fire Chief Jim DeGroff called it a new crown jewel for the community. “We knew it was going to be a marathon not a sprint. I don't know if we knew it was going to be this long of a marathon but we've made it and because of the taxpayers in the village of Paw Paw and Paw Paw Township because of all the support the community has given us, we're here today at our new fire station.”
Paw Paw Township and members of the fire department worked with Schley Nelson Architects and AVB to design a new 19 600 square foot fire station. The new facility provides additional storage for updated resources and most importantly allows for quicker and safer responses. The new station's location should also improve response times, firefighters said.
The Barton Group partnered with the Paw Paw community to build the new building on a 4,2 acre parcel. The $5,5 million dollar facility was funded with a millage/bond that passed by the community in August of 2021. Designed by Schley-Nelson Architects and constructed by AVB, Inc, the new fire station features five apparatus bays, office spaces, a large education centre, physical activity area and a much needed decontamination room, hose tower, lounge and kitchen. We didn’t forget the lounge space these volunteer based firefighters deserve!
The Paw Paw Fire Department (PPFD) has 40 active members and numerous honorary members. All of the members, including the officers, volunteer their time and energy receiving no compensation for the work that they do. Paw Paw is one of the very few departments left in the state that are entirely volunteer and they are very proud of that tradition. The department services all of Paw Paw Township, the Village of Paw Paw and portions of Antwerp, Almena and Waverly Townships covering a total of 80 square miles. The Department responds to all fire emergencies as well as calls for extrication. In 2019, the department responded to about 225 calls for service.
