Cape Town fire crews respond to ship fire in the harbour
A ship in Cape Town harbour caught alight on Wednesday, 11 May 2022. Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service, said, “The incident occurred on 11 May and was reported at 09h20am as a ship alight in the docks. It was a decommissioned fishing vessel that caught alight. Response included a fire engine and water tanker from Roeland Street Fire Station, fire engines from Brooklyn and Salt River, a fire engine and rescue vehicle from Milnerton, a water tanker from Epping and Divisional Commander Simon Abrahams from Roeland Street. It was the insulation in the cold storage area that was burning. The Fire and Rescue Service was assisted by tug boats and was withdrawn at 10h30. The fire was extinguished at 12h07. The insulation was destroyed and no injuries were reported. Challenges faced included an adequate and constant water supply.”
