Firefighters extinguish a multi-storey building fire at the Department of Correctional Services head office, Pretoria

The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department responded to a multi-storey building fire incident at the Department of Correctional Services head office in Dr WF Nkomo Street in Pretoria on the evening of Sunday, 8 September 2024. Lindsay Mnguni, acting public information and media liaison officer at the City of Tshwane Emergency Services, said, “The building fire was reported to the City of Tshwane Emergency Call Centre at about 18h41. The centre immediately dispatched multiple firefighting resources from Central Fire Station, Innesdale Fire Station, Hatfield Fire Station and Philip Nel Park Fire Station to the scene.”
“These included three fire trucks, two ladders, a mobile command unit, a hose layer and a district commander’s unit. Upon arrival, firefighters found that the fire was burning on the sixth floor and they immediately began with exterior firefighting operations by positioning the two ladders tactically to quickly extinguish the fire before it could spread to the higher floors. The other crews were preparing to enter the building at the same time to ensure that the fire was contained to only the involved floor and that all occupants had evacuated the burning building”, said Mnguni.
“Only five offices were damaged by the fire and firefighters successfully saved the building from being destroyed. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined”, he concluded.
