eThekwini Fire crews respond to structural fire in uMhlanga Rocks, Durban
A fire broke out in a flat in a high-rise building in uMhlanga Rocks, Durban on Sunday, 3 January 2021. eThekwini Fire and Emergency Services’ regional commander for the Northern Region, Raj Sewsunker said, “One bedroom in the flat on the sixth floor of the building was alight. All persons were evacuated from the sixth floor prior to arrival of the Brigade. A rescue pumper, hydraulic platform, a water carrier and a division commander were despatched from the Umhlanga Fire Station. A rescue pumper was despatched from the next closest fire station being Durban North Fire Station. Total of eight fire fighters, two station commanders and one division commander responded. Upon arrival, crews found smoke issuing from the sixth floor of the high-rise residential apartment. The officer in charge was informed that all persons from the fire floor had been evacuated. The fire crews used two lines of hose from a hydrant on the sixth floor to extinguish the fire. The rising main was boosted by the rescue pumper at the ground level. The fire was confined to the contents of one bedroom; smoke damage to entire apartment. Time of despatch: 17h59 arrival time of first appliance: 18h04. No injuries were reported nor sustained.
