Fire stations of the world: New £4,3m Matlock Fire Station officially opened in Derbyshire, UK

The doors of the new Matlock Fire Station in Derbyshire, UK, which became operational in September 2024, were opened as part of an official ceremony attended by local councillors and dignitaries on Tuesday, 22 October 2024. The county's chief fire officer Gavin Tomlinson was joined by councillors and other dignitaries for the ceremony at Matlock Fire Station. The new £4.3m facility, built at the site of the former fire station in Chesterfield Road, is designed to minimise carbon emissions.
Features include a double bay vehicle garage, accommodation for fire service workers and a new smoke training facility built to replicate a three-bedroom house combined with a commercial stairwell, basement, loft and confined space.
Chief Tomlinson said, “The new station is a fantastic asset to the community of Matlock and gives our firefighters direct access to state-of-the-art training facilities which the whole service can be proud of. It is a modern fire station fit for the future.”
Beyond its commitment to environmental progress, the station offers enhanced functionality to better serve the community. In addition to providing accommodations for fire service personnel, the facility includes a state-of-the-art smoke training facility, simulating a typical three-bedroom house alongside a commercial stairwell, basement, loft and confined space to support realistic training scenarios.
The building is equipped throughout with energy saving technologies – a key consideration when replacement of the old station was first greenlit in 2021, as part of the service’s net zero and sustainable development strategy.
Solar panels, sensor LED lighting and water saving features are all intended to reduce the running costs and carbon emission of the new building and it is also the first Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service fire station to have fully electric powered heating.
