Bus fire on Du Toit’s Kloof Pass causes explosions by LPG cylinders; fire spread to surrounding vegetation
A bus caught fire on the Du Toit’s Kloof Pass on Sunday evening, 3 November 2024. The bus fire spread to the surrounding vegetation. Drakenstein Fire and Rescue Service Assistant Chief Fire Officer Dereck Peceur, said, “Drakenstein Fire responded to the truck fire after receiving the call. Upon arrival, the Cape Winelands District Municipality was informed when the vegetation started burning. All actions were focussed on preventing the spread of the fire from the trailer to the bus due to LPG gas cylinders being transported on the trailer.”
“We received the call 19h33 and crews returned back to the station at 00h50. Challenges faced included LPG gas cylinders that were transported on the trailer behind the bus. A few LPG cylinders exploded.”

“The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services confirm that the fire on the slopes of Du Toit’s Kloof Pass has been successfully contained. The fire started late last night due to a burning bus on the pass. There have been no reported injuries or loss of life. Fire Services remain on scene for mopping up operations until the area is deemed safe. The Du Toit’s Kloof pass is currently still closed.”
