Massive fire at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam causes chaos and destroys 50 cars, Netherlands

A large fire destroyed 40 to 50 cars in a parking lot in Rijsenhout early on Monday morning, 11 November 2024. The long-term parking lot is often used by Schiphol travellers. The fire was first reported around 03h00am. Responding firefighters found dozens of parked cars already ablaze. Photos from the scene show a huge sea of flames in the parking lot and a lot of smoke in the area.
A fire brigade spokesperson said another post shared on the social media platform, "#Fire #Rijsenhout At this moment there are still two electric vehicles on fire, extinguishing these vehicles will take some time. The other vehicles have been extinguished."
A Schiphol Airport spokesperson said, "The fire had no impact on our flight schedules and airport operations.
The car park, which is not run by the airport, is used by holidaymakers who travel via Schiphol by plane, according to local outlet the Leidsch Dagblad. The airport was not affected by the blaze.
The Bennebroekerweg, a road on the way to the car park, was closed as firefighters worked to bring the fire under control.
Rijsenhout falls under the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, which also covers Schiphol Airport. Schiphol Airport is located about 5,6 miles southwest of Amsterdam and was the world's third busiest in terms of international passenger traffic in 2023. It is estimated nearly 72 million passengers used the airport in 2019.
By 7:00 a.m., the fire department had the blaze well under control. Only two electric cars were still burning. “Those are a bit more difficult to extinguish”, a spokesperson for the local security region, Veiligheidsregio Kennemerland, told NH Nieuws.
The parking lot in question is used by Schiphol travellers who need to park their car for longer than a few hours.
