Fire stations of the world: CFA officially opens new Dundonnell Fire Station, Australia

Bristol, Tennessee is welcoming a new fire station near Holston View Elementary with the hopes of helping more residents. The station has been in operation since July 2024. Fire Chief Mike Carrier of the Bristol, Tennessee Fire Department said the new facility boasts numerous upgrades. It also holds safety measures that protect firefighters from deadly cancer-causing materials. “This station has an exhaust removal system, an air scrubber system that takes all the carcinogens that come from the oils and the fuels and the exhaust from these trucks and scrubs them out,” Chief Carrier said.
The new station replaces the old station two which was built in the 1960s.
Chief Carrier said that longevity was an important aspect when they began creating the new facility. “Those features are built into this station make this a station that should be able to serve the citizens of Bristol and this particular area for the next 50 years or so,” he said.
One of the firefighters working at the station says he is thankful for the new workspace. “Definitely a big upgrade from what we had. The station that we had, it was small. Some of the rooms we had, it was more or less open room. With this station you have your own room. It allows you to sleep better when you get the chance to do that,” Preston Cox, a firefighter said.
The station even has a community safe room, designed to be a safe area for those that need it in any type of situation.
Those that need the room simply lock the door and use the phone that connects them to dispatch.
Fire officials also hope the placement of the station allows for quicker response times. “What we are really shooting at is to be able to get that first unit and that first crew on scene within four minutes of the initial call for a structure fire and so, where it was previously located, it was pretty hard to hit those timelines,” Chief Carrier said.
A hose uncoupling ceremony, similar to a ribbon cutting, was held on Tuesday, 20 August 2024 to mark the official opening of the station.
Bristol Tennessee Fire Chief Mike Carrier joined city leaders for a dedication ceremony of Fire Station #2 on King College Road, noting that the new facility will enhance firefighter safety and improve response time to the City’s east end.

Key features include advanced systems to protect firefighters and their equipment from vehicle exhaust and other carcinogens, an exercise room, office space, large vehicle bays to accommodate ladder trucks and other large equipment, individual living quarters to accommodate both male and female firefighters and a safe room that allows anyone in danger to take shelter and call for help.
Construction began in 2022, Chief Carrier said and took longer than expected because of groundwater problems and supply chain issues.
Now that the facility is complete, it will house four or five firefighters at all times, plus an ambulance, a fire engine and a reserve ladder truck, all more centrally located within the area it serves.
Chief Carrier thanked City Council for investing in the new station and several new fire/rescue trucks in recent months, saying “we have a Council and Mayor that believe in public safety.”
Students from Holston View Elementary School, which is behind the new station, welcomed firefighters with a custom greeting card they all signed.
