City of Tshwane firefighters extinguish a transformer fire at the Njala substation in Moreleta Park

The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department responded to a substation fire incident in Delmas Road in Moreleta Park, Pretoria, on the morning of Saturday, 17 August 2024. Lindsay Mnguni, acting public information and media liaison officer at the City of Tshwane Emergency Services, said, “The substation fire was reported to the City of Tshwane Emergency Services Call Centre (ECC) at about 08h45am. The ECC immediately dispatched a fire truck and a rapid intervention unit from Erasmuskloof Fire Station to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters found that a 275kV transformer had exploded and was on fire, issuing a large plume of black smoke.”
“Precautionary safety measures were initiated by the firefighters and officials from the Electricity Department to ensure that power supply to the transformer was isolated before firefighting operations commenced. The ECC also dispatched multiple additional firefighting resources from Silverton and Mamelodi Fire Stations to the scene as backup. These included a fire truck, an industrial pumper, a water tanker and a district commander’s unit” Mnguni added.
“The fire was extinguished at about 10h47. Several other transformers in the substation remained unaffected by the fire. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.”
