Fire breaks out at recycling plant next to Makro, Meadowdale Industrial, Ekurhuleni

A fire broke out at a recycling plant next to Makro in Meadowdale Industrial, Ekurhuleni, on Saturday, 10 August 2024 William Ntladi, district manager media liaison: Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), said, “At about 14h18 on Saturday afternoon, the City of Ekurhuleni Emergency Services received a well alight factory call at Meadowdale, Edenvale. Bedfordview Fire Station firefighters as primary responding crews, swiftly responded for intervention.”
Ntladi added, “While on route, backup was activated from Edenvale, Primrose, Boksburg and Brakpan fire stations respectively, due to size of the incident as reported. A huge cloud of carbon smoke visibility from a distance triggered the activation of a backup as well. As different crews arrived on scene, fire suppression took place. ACSA OR Tambo International Airport and ADT water tankers were also on scene. No casualties recorded on scene. Fire scene was completely extinguished the next day (Sunday) morning.”
“It is alleged that the cause of the fire is flying ambers from the grass fire outside the premises that were blown over the perimeter fence onto the bailed recycling plastics stacked over each other and started burning. The operation took longer because of windy conditions on the day that kept flaring and fanning up hot spots”, said Ntladi.
“The highlight of the operation was the usage of TLB tractor, which helped to open the bottom crusted material that produced smoke. Foam was as well applied to aid with smothering of the flames.”
“The nearest fire hydrant was over 200 metres away with very low water pressure supply. The second one was picked from the company nearby, which had higher water pressure of which it aided with sustained supply”, concluded Ntladi.
