Historic former Catholic church destroyed by fire, The Netherlands

In the early hours of Thursday, 1 January 2026, shortly after midnight, around 00:50–01:30am, during New Year’s celebrations, a fire broke out in the tower section of the neo-Gothic Vondelkerk in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Flames spread quickly through the tall wooden roof and upper structure of the church. Thick smoke and sparks shot high into the sky above Vondelstraat as the fire intensified. Within a short time, the fire escalated into a major incident. Emergency dispatchers raised the alarm and fire units were mobilised from across the region. Nearby streets were cordoned off as fire crews struggled with extensive flames and flying embers, which posed risks to adjacent structures and residents.
By early morning at around 02:00–03:00, parts of the 50-metre tower and the roof collapsed, leaving only the exterior stone walls standing. The fire raged on for hours, with firefighters battling to contain it amid weather conditions and the complexity of the tall church structure.
The response to the Vondelkerk fire was coordinated by the Veiligheidsregio Amsterdam-Amstelland (Amsterdam-Amstelland Safety Region), the regional authority responsible for emergency planning and operations, including fire services.
Brandweer Amsterdam-Amstelland (Fire Brigade), under the regional safety authority, led fire suppression, external water pumping operations ie drawing water from nearby sources such as Vondelpark and structural monitoring to prevent wider collapse.
Reinforcements from surrounding regions
Due to the scale of the fire and prolonged efforts required, additional fire crews and vehicles from outside Amsterdam were brought in to assist and relieve initial responders.
Specialised equipment
The Dutch Navy contributed with one of the country’s largest aerial platforms to support firefighters at height, which was particularly important given the church’s tall spire and roofline.
Police and municipal safety teams worked alongside fire units to evacuate residents from nearby homes (with power temporarily cut to approximately 90 households for safety), maintain perimeters and clear smoke-affected streets.
Given the broader context of New Year’s Eve unrest and high demand on services, other support resources were stretched but were directed to ensure safe operations around the Vondelkerk and adjacent neighbourhoods.
The fire burned uncontrolled through much of the morning. Fire officials eventually declared the situation under control and gave the “brand meester”, the official Dutch indication that active flames have been extinguished, later in the day as water and hot spot operations wound down.
Heavy smoke and flying embers led authorities to evacuate residents living on Vondelstraat and nearby streets as a precaution. Many were temporarily housed at an emergency shelter on PC Hooftstraat while firefighting continued. Electricity to homes in the immediate vicinity was also temporarily disconnected to reduce hazards.
Later, after street cleaning and safety checks were completed, most residents were allowed to return home.

By dawn, the iconic spire and large parts of the roof had collapsed, leaving the church largely gutted. Local officials and heritage advocates described the event as an enormous cultural loss for Amsterdam. The cause of the fire remained under investigation, with some speculation about fireworks involvement, though no official conclusion had been reached at the time of reporting.
Restoration Efforts began to assess whether parts of the church’s walls and heritage fabric can be preserved or rebuilt, prompting fundraising and community support campaigns. Local Authorities and organisations like Stadsherstel Amsterdam examined damage to the historic structure and plan long-term remediation.
The historic church was built in 1872 by Pierre Cuypers, a famed Dutch architect known for designing dozens of churches in the Netherlands. Formerly of the Diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam, the building was sold in 1979 and deconsecrated, a formal act by the Church to remove the sacred character of the church so it is no longer considered a dedicated sacred space for divine worship. After a century of use as a sacred space, the building was eventually renovated for use as an event venue.
The property owner Stadsherstel Amsterdam (“Urban Restoration Amsterdam”) said in a statement that the fire caused the church’s tower to fall into the nave. Photos show the building completely gutted as of Jan. 2.
“The loss of this beautiful church touches us all,” the restoration group said. “Our thoughts go out to the local residents, the regular tenants of the church who have lost their workplace, and to the people who had booked the Vondelkerk for their wedding, company party, concert, or other special moments.”
“We are doing everything we can to see what we can do for them in the coming days,” the group said. The organization added it was launching a crowdfunding campaign to help restore the building.
It was not immediately clear what started the fire. No deaths or injuries were reported.
