Family of four found dead in Bloemfontein
Staff members of the Mangaung Fire Service had a horrible experience in the early hours of Thursday, 1 July 2021, that will not be forgotten soon. “Members of the Central Fire Station in Bloemfontein were dispatched at 5h00 to a flat fire. On arrival, it was found that smoke was billowing from the flat and a 17-year- old girl was found on the lawn in front of the building. The fire was restricted to the lounge and a neighbour tried to extinguish the flames through the front door utilising a hose reel”, said Braam van Zyl, divisional officer at Mangaung Fire Department.
“Fire fighters were informed that the rest of the family was still trapped in the flat. Fire fighters with self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) entered the flat and searched the premises in zero visibility conditions. They discovered the body of a 50-year-old female on the bed in the main bedroom. In the adjacent room the body of a 56-year-old man was found on the bed. In the next room, the body of a 14-year-old child was discovered next to the bed in a pool of blood. All three bodies were carried outside where emergency service staff of ER24 certified them as dead. The girl that was laying outside the flat, was also certified dead.”
“It appeared that the throats of the 14-year-old boy and the 17-year-old were both slit open and they sustained various stab wounds.”
“The girl that was a matric scholar at Eunice High School, managed to escape from the flat after she was stabbed with a knife and sought assistance from the next door neighbour. She returned to the flat and collapsed in front of it.”
Parkweg Police received information about a house that was burning in Victoria Road, said Police spokesperson Colonel Thandi Mbambo. "On arrival at the scene, after the fire brigade had extinguished the fire, four bodies - that of the father, mother and two children, were found. The teenagers were stabbed. The father, 56 and mother, 50, had no visible injuries, while the 17-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy were found with stab wounds and their throats slit," Mbambo said.
Preliminary investigations suggested there was no forced entry. "The investigation continues to determine what actually transpired," Mbambo said. The SAPS is currently investigating a case of murder and arson. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
