Sixteen killed in Western Cape bus crash, Breede Valley
Sixteen people, including children, were killed and 20 others were seriously injured when a bus overturned on the N1 highway near Touws River in the Western Cape. The single-vehicle crash occurred just after midnight on 2 July 2026, while the bus was travelling from Cape Town to Idutywa in the Eastern Cape. According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), the bus was transporting approximately 78 passengers. “The crash resulted in 16 fatalities, 20 occupants sustained injuries and were transported to Worcester Hospital and 43 occupants refused medical treatment,” said the RTMC of the overturned bus.
Authorities confirmed that at least three children were among the deceased.
Survivors and officials reported that the crash happened after the driver allegedly swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle or delivery truck, lost control, and the bus overturned.
Western Cape police have launched an investigation into a fatal bus crash.
Police spokesperson Andre Traut said initial findings suggest that no other vehicles were involved in the incident. Emergency services responded quickly, while the exact cause of the crash is still being determined.

We are devastated by the loss of at least 16 lives in this horrific incident. News of this tragedy has sent shockwaves through our communities, and our hearts go out to the families and loved ones who are now faced with the unimaginable pain of losing someone dear to them. We also hold those who sustained injuries in our thoughts and wish them strength and a speedy recovery.
Touwsrivier is an important part of the Breede Valley, and today our entire municipality mourns alongside those affected by this tragedy. While many details surrounding the accident are still being investigated, what remains certain is the profound impact this loss will have on countless families and communities.
