Chula Vista Fire Station 10, located at 1715 Millenia Avenue, Chula Vista, California in the US is the first fire station to open in San Diego County’s second-largest city in 17 years and was opened in April 2022. Station 10 is a 12 575 square foot facility that will serve the new master-planned community of Millenia located in south east Chula Vista. The design and construction of the Fire Station was managed by the Developer and was turned over to the City upon completion and acceptance by the City and Fire Department. An iconic design for a civic beacon, Chula Vista Fire Station 10 at Millenia showcases strong geometric forms and modern lines, blending seamlessly into the new master-planned Millenia community that it serves. The $8.1 million, two-storey fire station includes three deep bays for parking fire apparatus, associated support spaces, administrative offices and living accommodations for as many as 10 personnel.
The living spaces include a fitness room, a kitchen, a dining room, a dayroom, individual bunk rooms, single occupancy restroom facilities and two large outdoor patios. Desiring to achieve a high level of sustainability, photovoltaic panels were engineered to generate enough energy to offset half of the facility’s usage. Through careful planning and attention to detail, the station supports the fire department’s mission and has been enthusiastically received by fire personnel, the developer, the City of Chula Vista and the Millenia community.
After this design-build project conceptually was designed and awarded, the design team was faced with a new challenge. The department changed its original programming requirements in an effort to decrease its incident response times by shortening the distance from key living areas, including the bunk rooms, dayroom and kitchen, to the front of the apparatus bay. This was a substantial challenge because of the restricted site size and the need for a two-storey building.
Several studies were performed to design the most efficient building layout possible for a two-storey building. It ultimately led to a reduction in overall building programme area and the addition of a fire pole.
Chula Vista is the second-largest city in the San Diego metropolitan area, the seventh largest city in Southern California, the fifteenth largest city in the state of California, and the 78th-largest city in the United States. The population was 275 487 as of the 2020 census, up from 243 916 as of the 2010 census. Located about halfway between the two downtowns of San Diego and Tijuana in the South Bay, the city is at the centre of one of the richest culturally diverse zones in the United States.
