Hearse catches fire in Paarl, Western Cape, with corpse inside
A hearse caught fire while transporting a body to a funeral in Paarl on Saturday, 5 December 2020. The vehicle was en route to the family of the deceased’s home when the incident occurred. Dereck Peceur, Head: Fire and Rescue Services-Operations at Drakenstein Fire and Rescue Service said, “We received the call at 08h14 and responded with two major pumpers. The report came in as a motor vehicle fire in the residential area Paarl East, close to the SPAR Shopping centre. The hearse alight was enroute to a funeral service carrying a coffin with a body. Upon arrival at the scene the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. The vehicle was totally destroyed in the fire and the coffin suffered extensive damage. The body of the deceased did not suffer damage and the service continued after being placed in a new coffin.”
