Three buildings gutted at a factory in Killarney Gardens, Milnerton, Cape Town
Three buildings were gutted at the Starflex Plastics factory in Killarney Gardens in Milnerton, Cape Town on Saturday night, 12 December 2020, at approximately 22h13. Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service said that crews responded from Milnerton Fire Station with a fire engine and water tanker, from Bellville with a fire engine, rescue vehicle and hazmat vehicle, from Goodwood Fire Station with a fire engine and aerial appliance, from Roeland Street with an aerial appliance and from Salt River, Epping, Melkbos, Brooklyn and Durbanville fire stations with fire engines. 52 staff was on scene. “In total 13 fire fighting appliances and 52 staff members managed to contain the fire just after 04h00am and crews monitored the area for a considerable time for flare-ups. Three buildings and equipment were destroyed in the fire. Challenges faced included the intense heat and the fireload coupled with the wind that fanned the fire to the adjacent buildings. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still unknown,” said Carelse.
