K9 Dante leads the search and rescue team to two girls who went missing in KwaDukuza in KwaZulu-Natal
K9 Dante was instrumental in the rescuing of two sisters who had gone missing in the KwaDukuza area, north of Durban, on Monday, 7 March 2022. The South African Police Service said on Tuesday that officers from the Umhlali K9 Search and Rescue and Unit responded to a complaint about two missing girls, aged five and 15, from the KwaDukuza area. It was alleged the girls went missing from home after an altercation on Monday. The children were spotted in the Kenya township, Glenhills area late Monday evening, police said. “This morning (Tuesday), a search was conducted with the help of K9 Dante in a dense field that was pointed out by community members in the Kenya area. After an extensive search, Dante led members to the two missing girls,” police said.
“The 15-year-old girl was unresponsive and the five-year-old was found asleep on her sister. Urgent medical assistance was rendered to the older girl who was transported to the KwaDukuza Hospital. The younger sister was left in the custody of her mother.” IPSS Medical Rescue head, Dylan Meyrick, said that due to poor lighting on Monday night, the search for the girls was called off and resumed at first light. On Tuesday morning, police from various units conducted an extensive search in the area they went missing. Officers from the Umhlali K9 Search and Rescue and Unit and IPSS Medical Rescue searched for the two missing girls in the KwaDukuza area. Several hours later, both girls were found and urgent medical assistance was requested. “IPSS Medical Rescue units, including advanced life support, responded to the scene, the five-year-old was found to be in good health and was reunited with her mother. The 15-year-old was treated on scene by paramedics and transported to a local hospital for further treatment,” Meyrick said. “Great work by all parties involved, including private security companies, community members and SAPS K9 Dante, his handler Clinton Odayar and their unit commander, Captain Munsamy.” Sources: IOL, IPSS Medical Rescue |
