Mass shooting at Bondi Beach, Sidney, Australia

On 14 December 2025, in the late afternoon at Bondi Beach in eastern Sydney, a mass shooting erupted during a public Hanukkah celebration known as Chanukah by the Sea, a Jewish festival attended by hundreds of community members and families. At approximately 18h47 (AEDT), two armed men opened fire from a pedestrian footbridge near Campbell Parade, close to Archer Park and the children’s playground. Multiple eyewitnesses initially thought the loud blasts were fireworks before the reality of gunfire became clear. The shooters fired many rounds at the crowd, causing chaos as people ran for cover, some into the ocean, others into cafes, shops and nearby buildings.
According to official tallies, 16 people died in the attack, including 15 victims and one of the perpetrators, and dozens were injured — many critically — with roughly 40 or more people taken to Sydney hospitals. Victims ranged widely in age, from children through to older adults.
Perpetrators
Police identified the attackers as a father and son duo, a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son, who opened fire using multiple firearms, including rifles and shotguns owned by the father. The older man was killed by police and the younger was critically wounded, taken into custody and later charged with 59 offences, including 15 counts of murder and multiple counts of attempted murder.
Authorities also found improvised explosive devices in the suspects’ vehicle that did not detonate.
The incident was swiftly declared a terrorist and antisemitic attack by Australian officials, with flags and other materials linked to Islamic State ideology found in the attackers’ vehicle.
Emergency services were called almost immediately after the first gunfire was reported at around 18h47, triggering a major deployment. Police units from the Eastern Suburbs Command and specialist tactical teams raced to the scene within minutes, establishing perimeters and instructing the public to avoid Bondi Beach and seek shelter.
Armed officers located the shooters on the bridge and engaged them. One attacker was shot dead and the other was captured and rushed to hospital under police guard after being critically wounded.
Law enforcement maintained a crisis perimeter, cordoning off surrounding streets and the beach area, seeking suspicious items and bringing in specialist bomb squad units to investigate and neutralize devices found in the suspects’ vehicle.
NSW Ambulance and paramedic teams rapidly arrived, working under tense conditions to triage and treat victims at the scene before coordinating transport to major Sydney hospitals such as St Vincent’s, Royal Prince Alfred and St George. Multiple ambulances, critical care paramedics and an air ambulance were deployed to expedite care for the wounded.
Lifeguards from the Bondi Surf Lifesaving Club were among the first to respond, administering first aid, using surfboards as improvised stretchers and sheltering people inside the club’s facilities.
Authorities activated the Public Information and Inquiry Centre, a dedicated hotline and support service assisting families and the public to track missing persons and get emergency information.
The Australian Red Cross “Register, Find, Reunite” service was also mobilized to help reunite families and locate loved ones separated during the chaos.
In the days after the shooting, hundreds of injured victims remained in Sydney hospitals, with some in critical condition and others receiving ongoing treatment and rehabilitation.
Thousands participated in vigil events, moments of silence and memorial ceremonies near Bondi Beach, including a notable paddle-out ceremony where surfers, swimmers and community members gathered in the ocean in tribute to victims.
Record numbers of blood donations surged across Australia as people responded to calls for help from trauma care services.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the attack an “act of pure evil” and announced plans for a national firearm buyback scheme, aiming to reduce the number of guns in circulation and tighten gun licensing laws.
