City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department strengthens firefighting capacity and honours service excellence
|

In the City of Tshwane’s endeavour to serving over four million residents and promoting fire safety, the Emergency Services Department (ESD) has successfully trained former Emergency Medical Officers to qualify as firefighters. The auspicious occasion took place at Moretele Park Resort in the heart of Mamelodi surrounded by beautiful mountains. This initiative strengthens the Fire Services by integrating personnel who already possess critical medical expertise, a strong understanding of emergency response and a deep commitment to saving lives and protecting property. The newly trained firefighters bring valuable skills that enhance operational efficiency and emergency preparedness across the city.
To mark this milestone, the department will host a Firefighters’ Passing Out Parade for 39 firefighters. The firefighters that are passing out will be strategically deployed across various regions to reinforce existing fire station crews and improve response capacity.
Speaking on the initiative, the Chief of Emergency Services, Mr Moshema Mosia said that 77 percent of the newly appointed employees were internal candidates, demonstrating the department’s commitment to skills development, career progression and empowering existing employees through continuous training and capacity building.
Addressing the significance of the occasion, the Executive Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya said that “the men and women in uniform dedicate their lives to saving others, often placing themselves in harm’s way to protect our communities.” The Executive Mayor further commended both the new firefighters and retired members for their selfless service and unwavering commitment to the safety of Tshwane residents.
The event also marked the unveiling of five Rapid Intervention Vehicles, which will enhance operational readiness and strengthen emergency response capabilities across the city.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Safety, Alderman Hannes Coetzee, commended the Emergency Services Department for its continued efforts in advancing service delivery goals and improving response times through investment in both human capital and modern resources.
The Emergency Services Department will in this occasion honour retired members who have dedicated many years of loyal service to the communities of Tshwane. This recognition highlights the invaluable contribution, sacrifice, and commitment demonstrated by these members throughout their careers. A firefighter’s oath is a lifelong calling to serve, and the department deems it fitting to formally acknowledge those who upheld this pledge with distinction.
In addition, the ceremony will include the conferment of ranks to 64 newly promoted officers, recognising their professional growth and leadership within the Emergency Services Department.
The City of Tshwane remains committed to building a skilled, resilient, and community-focused Emergency Services workforce to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
