A truck crashed through the roof of a building in Westmead, Durban
A heavy commercial vehicle crashed through the roof of a building at 7 Umdoni Road in Westmead, Durban, on Monday, 8 February 2021. “We received the call at 11h55am. The driver of a heavy duty goods vehicle lost control of the vehicle causing the vehicle to veer of the road and collide into a commercial building causing damage to the wall of the structure. The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and was removed from the vehicle by members of the public and transported to hospital by ambulance. One rescue pumper from the Pinetown South Fire Station with a station officer and three fire fighters attended the incident,” said Raj Sewsunker, regional commander, Northern Region at eThekwini Fire and Emergency Services.
“The fire team made the incident safe by stabilising the vehicle, cordoning off the immediate surrounding and disconnecting the battery to the vehicle and supervised the removal of the vehicle by the towing services. There was partial damage to the external wall of the structure about a span of approximately five metres. We were informed by the bystanders that the driver had sustained minor head and bodily injuries and was declared stable by the ambulance crew. Challenges faced included a delay by the insurance company of the premises to grant authority for the vehicle to be removed. Metro Police were in attendance.” Rescue Care's Leon Fourie said that paramedics had to act swiftly on the scene to attend to the driver. “Upon arrival paramedics found that a single truck had lost control careened off the road, went over a barrier and through the roof of an industrial building,” Fourie said. “The truck driver sustained multiple injuries and required advanced life support treatment before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care,” he added.
