Ekurhuleni crews respond to electrical substation fire in Springs
Ekurhuleni crews responded to a fire at an electrical substation in Springs on Sunday, 14 February 2021. “City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services` (DEMS) fire fighting teams from both Springs Central and Selection Park fire stations responded to the corner of 7th and 6th Streets in Springs central business district (CBD) at 16h05 to a substation reported to be well alight. Transformer oil was burning. The first arriving crew was from Springs Central Fire Station with a major pumper, followed by a major pumper and water tanker from Selection Park. Scene assessment was conducted prior fireground operations could start and found that the substation was still having live electrical current. Council electricians had to be called to the scene to isolate the power prior fire suppression,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison at Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS).
Ntladi added, “After the ‘all clear safety signal’ was given by technicians, fireground operations started immediately using water and foam. Flames were knocked down without damages to the neighbouring structures. No injuries were accounted for neither to the fire fighting crews or bystanders on scene. The scene was then handed over to the technicians after the blaze was extinguished and the entire transformer cooled off.” The cause of the fire is still undetermined and is a subject of investigations.
