It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we gather to say our final goodbye to Emergency Services Volunteer Stephan Smith — a devoted husband, father, son, colleague, friend and servant of his community. Today marks the end of his watch but his legacy of courage, compassion and selfless service will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Throughout his career, Stephan answered every call with unwavering dedication. When others fled from danger, he moved towards it. He stood between his community and disaster, offering protection, hope and reassurance during some of life's most difficult moments. Whether battling raging fires, responding to emergencies or comforting those in distress, Stephan embodied the true spirit of an emergency services volunteer.
His life was a reflection of the values that define the emergency services: courage in the face of adversity, strength during times of uncertainty and an unbreakable commitment to protecting others. He saved lives, preserved property and brought comfort to countless individuals during their darkest hours. His service was never measured by recognition or reward but by his willingness to help others without hesitation.
As emergency workers, we often speak of a calling rather than a profession. Stephan answered that calling faithfully. God protected him through countless emergencies and gave him the strength to serve others with dignity and honour. He carried the responsibility of safeguarding his community with humility and pride, always placing the needs of others before his own.
Today, we entrust Stephan into God's eternal care. While we struggle to understand why such a remarkable life was taken too soon, we find comfort in knowing that he fulfilled his purpose with distinction. His watch on earth may have ended, but his service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
On a personal note, Stephan, my heart is broken. I was privileged to be part of your emergency journey and now I stand among those saying farewell at the end of your watch. The memories we shared, the lives you touched, and the example you set will remain with us forever. Your impact reaches far beyond the fire station walls and extends into every life you influenced through your kindness, professionalism and unwavering dedication.
To your beloved child, wife, family, friends and colleagues, may you find comfort in knowing that Stephan's legacy lives on through each of you. May God's loving and protecting hand remain upon you during this difficult time, granting strength, peace and healing in the days ahead.

Stephan Smith, a well-known 28-year-old rescue worker from Middelburg, South Africa, was tragically killed in a head-on collision on the R542 road on 5 June 2026. The multi-vehicle accident claimed his life alongside five other individuals.
Delta 1 Rescue Diving sahred the following: Some people measure a life by the years they lived, but others are measured by the lives they touched. Although we knew Stephan for only a short time, his impact on our lives and our organisation was profound and lasting. He gave selflessly of himself, always willing to answer the call when someone was in need. Through his dedication to search and rescue, he brought hope, comfort, and assistance to countless people during some of their darkest moments.
His time with us was far too short, but his legacy of service, compassion, courage, and unwavering commitment will remain forever. On behalf of Delta 1 Rescue, we are deeply grateful for his dedication, his leadership, and the example he set for all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
