Fire stations of the world: South Metro Fire Rescue Station 31, Colorado in the US
South Metro Fire Rescue Station 31 was built between August 2015 and April 2016 and held its grand opening ceremony on 15 June 2016. Located at 5901 S Havana Street, Greenwood Village in Colorado, this state-of-the-art, 12 735-aquare foot fire station was designed to be as functional as possible while maintaining the aesthetic of the surrounding Greenwood Village neighbourhood. The existing facility was demoed and replaced with a fire station. Features of the facility include seven bedrooms, a state-of-the-art workout facility, a kitchen and day-room to accommodate a six-person shift, five bathrooms, two offices, a patio with direct access to the kitchen and day-room and a two-door apparatus bay. A unique feature of this fire station includes supporting the South Metro dive team. Features include dive equipment storage and an apparatus bay designed to fit the dive boat.
Holding an important corner of the neighbourhood, trucks enter off Havana and exit to East Orchard Road. Concentrating the building mass away from the neighbours, the living area was designed as two storeys to maximise open, green space. The building forms and materials are kept simple, breaking up the mass to be more in scale with the surrounding houses. Two main hipped roofs float via a clerestory over a brick base, softening the mass and height. The clerestory design provides ample daylight to the living quarters and apparatus bays, while reducing energy needs.
South Metro's Engine Companies are designed to be initial response units to all-hazard emergencies involving fires, medicals, traffic accidents or hazardous materials. Engines are staffed by three or four fire fighters and depending where they are housed in our district, carry between 750 and 1 500 gallons of water.
South Metro Medic Units are staffed by a crew of two fire fighters and at least one is a paramedic. They respond to all types of emergencies and can transport patients to the hospital.
Dive Rescue 3 is a specialty vehicle operated by South Metro's Water Rescue Team. It responds to all water related rescue and recovery calls with certified rescue divers. It carries a wide variety of equipment including dry suits and SCUBA gear and also tows a Boston Whaler Rescue Boat. The 1994 Supthen/Salisbury originally served with the Mastic NY Fire Department and responded to the World Trade Centre attack on 9/11/01.
