Thatched-roof house burned down; firefighters saved three outbuilding lapas, Waterval, Pretoria

A thatched-roof house burned down but firefighters saved three outbuilding lapas in Waterval, Pretoria on Saturday afternoon, 27 July 2024. Lindsay Mnguni, acting public information and media liaison officer at the City of Tshwane Emergency Services, said, “The Emergency Services Department responded to a house fire incident in Wallmannsthal Road in Waterval. The house fire was initially reported to the City of Tshwane Emergency Services Call Centre (ECC) as a grassfire at about 14h40.”
“The ECC immediately dispatched a grassfire unit from Themba Fire Station to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters found that a thatched roof lapa was also on fire. They immediately called for backup and began with firefighting operations. They saved the outbuilding lapa structure from being completely burned down. Only partial damage occurred to the roof of the lapa”, said Mnguni.
He added, “Members of the community then reported to the firefighters on scene that a nearby house was on fire at an adjacent plot. Multiple additional firefighting resources from various stations including Wonderboom, Rosslyn, Ga-Rankuwa and Mamelodi Fire Stations were dispatched to the scene. These included three fire trucks, three water tankers and a district commander’s unit. They battled and extinguished the fire at about 18h26. They managed to protect and save two nearby lapas at this plot that were exposed to the fire from the main house.”
No injuries were reported in both these incidents. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
