City Of Tshwane firefighters participate In 702 Walk the Talk
|

The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department firefighters took part in the annual 702 Walk The Talk walk held on Sunday, 28 July 2024. 20 firefighters dressed in fire gear braved the cold Sunday morning and joined the thousands of people who walked the 8km distance from Freedom Park to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. They were even more excited and energetic when they learned that two senior managers of the department, acting Chief of Emergency Services, Dr Tanja Terblanché and Divisional Chief Thabo Charles Mabaso, were also participating in the walk.
The firefighters also enjoyed the walk alongside City of Tshwane top management officials, including the City Manager, Mr Johann Mettler and the political leadership led by the Executive Mayor, Alderman Cilliers Brink.
Firefighters enjoyed a chat and a light moment during the walk with the chairperson of the Section 79 Committee for Community Safety and Emergency Services, Cllr Thabang Sebotsane.
This year’s fun walk was aimed at commemorating 30 years of democracy of our country, taking the firefighters and other walkers through the Pretoria CBD via a plethora of heritage sites.
Firefighters perform different tasks that demand of them not only to be physically fit daily but to also be mentally fit. This walk provided them with a very rare opportunity to meet members of the public and share a common journey of endurance with them.
Although the fire gear was heavy, the walk became a great educational experience for the public, as firefighters walked and talked about the challenges and joys of being a firefighter.
There were wonderful moments as each of the firefighters reached the finishing point and received their medals of participation. To them, this was one of a few memorable days that they will cherish for many years to come.

The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department provides disaster management, rescue and firefighting services to prevent loss of life and property. Resources are also organised to identify, reduce and minimise the impact of disasters and emergencies on residents, properties and the environment.
