Technology: Teen volunteer firefighter invents two firefighting gadgets
At just 17 years old, Paul Hyman from New York, USA, combined his love for technology and firefighting to invent a miniature infrared thermal imaging camera for firefighter safety gear. His goal was simple but life-saving: to help firefighters see through smoke, navigate hazardous areas and rescue victims faster and more safely. As a volunteer firefighter, Paul knew how smoke inhalation and poor visibility could slow down emergency response.
His lightweight infrared camera uses thermal imaging technology to detect heat signatures, much like night vision, helping firefighters move confidently even in zero visibility environments.
But Paul didn’t stop there. He also created a fire prevention sensor for dryer vents, a device that detects overheating lint and automatically releases carbon dioxide to prevent house fires before they happen.
His life-saving inventions caught the attention of fire departments and tech experts, earning him a full scholarship to Clarkson University, where he continues working on firefighting technology, fire detection systems, and smart safety devices.
