City of Tshwane firefighters respond to multiple buses on fire in Mabopane, Pretoria North
The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department responded to a fire incident that involved multiple buses in Industrial Road, in Mabopane, north of Pretoria, on the afternoon of Tuesday, 17 June 2025. Lindsay Mnguni, acting public information and media liaison officer, City of Tshwane Emergency Services, said, “The fire was reported as a grassfire incident to the Emergency Communication Centre at about 12h16 and a fire engine was immediately dispatched from Mabopane Fire Station to the scene.”
“Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed that there was a grassfire and two of the many private buses that were parked inside the open yard of the bus depot were also involved in fire. The fire was spreading quickly towards other buses as they were parked closely together and so the firefighters immediately began with firefighting operations which helped to bring the fire under control, and they had called for back-up from other neighbouring fire stations. More firefighting resources were dispatched from Rosslyn Fire Station and Wonderboom Fire Station. These included two foam tenders, two fire engines, an aerial ladder and a district commander’s unit”, said Mnguni.
He added, “Although 23 buses were burned by the fire, some of which were completely burned and a few were partially burned, firefighters managed to save about 14 buses. The windy conditions also exacerbated the fire spread but the swift actions of the firefighters helped to successfully stop the fire from spreading and further damaging these 14 other buses, and they also extinguished the grassfire in the process, thus preventing it from causing further damage in the surrounding area.”
There were no injuries that were reported on this incident and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
