In March 2026, Nebraska experienced one of the most severe wildfire outbreaks in its history. A series of fast-moving grassland fires, led by the massive Morrill Fire, burned over 800,000 acres statewide, with the largest single blaze alone exceeding 640,000 acres, making it the biggest wildfire ever recorded in the state. The fires spread rapidly across western and central Nebraska, driven by high winds, extremely low humidity and unusually dry vegetation following a lack of winter precipitation. The disaster resulted in at least one confirmed fatality, dozens of destroyed structures, mass evacuations across multiple counties and severe agricultural losses, particularly grazing land for cattle.
The outbreak consisted of several major fires, the most significant being:
Morrill Fire – ~642,000 acres (largest in state history)
Cottonwood Fire – ~129,000 acres
Road 203 Fire – ~35,000 acres
Anderson Bridge Fire – ~17,000 acres
The Morrill Fire alone travelled tens of miles in a single day, fuelled by winds of up to 35mph and critically dry vegetation. At its peak, the wildfire complex became the largest in Nebraska’s recorded history, with flames spreading across multiple counties and threatening towns, ranches and critical infrastructure.
Multi-agency mobilisation
The response to the Nebraska wildfires was massive and highly coordinated, involving local fire departments (urban and rural), volunteer fire brigades, state emergency services, Federal wildfire management teams, National Guard units and out-of-state assistance through mutual aid agreements. More than 400 personnel were deployed at various stages of the response. Fire departments from cities such as Omaha, Lincoln and Columbus sent engines, water tenders and specialised brush units to affected areas.
Volunteer firefighters were the backbone of the initial response, especially in rural Nebraska. Crews worked 12-hour shifts for consecutive days battling advancing firelines. Departments with as few as 30 volunteers deployed more than half their personnel to the front lines. Regional “strike teams” combined multiple small departments into coordinated units. These teams often arrived first and protected homes, ranches and livestock before larger resources arrived.
Urban fire departments played a key support role. Lincoln Fire and Rescue deployed certified wildfire responders to western Nebraska for multi-day operations. Crews from multiple cities rotated through fire zones to maintain continuous suppression efforts. These units brought advanced firefighting equipment, wildland fire training (‘Red Card’ certification) and logistical and command support
As fires intensified, command transitioned to federal incident management teams, including the Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team. This shift enabled centralised coordination across counties, resource prioritisation and strategic fireline construction and containment planning.
An incident meteorologist was also embedded with crews to track weather shifts and predict fire behaviour.
National Guard and interstate assistance
The response expanded beyond Nebraska with the Nebraska National Guard supporting suppression operations on the ground. North Dakota National Guard deployed aerial firefighting support, including helicopters with water “Bambi Buckets.” This interstate cooperation was facilitated through emergency agreements, demonstrating the regional scale of the crisis.
Fire and rescue teams conducted emergency evacuations of towns such as Lewellen and areas near Lake McConaughy, door-to-door warnings in rural communities as well as protection of livestock and agricultural assets. Despite large-scale evacuations, only one fatality was reported, highlighting the effectiveness of rescue operations. Fire crews also successfully saved ranches and homes in active fire zones and prevented further civilian casualties, while maintaining emergency response coverage in unaffected areas.
Research has shown that wildfires in the western US are spreading more quickly as climate change leads to hotter, drier conditions there overall. Globally, the most extreme fires are twice as common as they were 20 years ago. And in the US there are more people and homes in the way of wildfires than there were in the past.
