New York City: inferno tears through four buildings, collapsing one, US
Four buildings were heavily damaged and one collapsed when a raging fire erupted in the Bronx early Wednesday, 18 May 2022. The fire erupted at a four-storey building on East 143rd Street at Willis Avenue in Mott Haven in the Bronx around 02h45am and quickly escalated to three alarms as it spread to adjacent buildings. Nearly 140 fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene, officials said. One fire fighter and a civilian suffered minor injuries.
“At around 2h45 this morning we received a phone call for a fire at 420 East 143rd Street. Units encountered heavy fire on arrival. We had one building fully involved with fire extending to the adjoining buildings. Four buildings total were involved in this fire. This fire went to a three-alarm. We had over 33 units and over 100 Fire and EMS personnel on the scene. We had a car parked on a fire hydrant which blocked it, we urge people never to park on these hydrants. We have one minor injury to a fire fighter. The fire is currently under investigation,” said FDNY Assistant Chief Kevin Brennan from the scene of this morning’s three-alarm fire. The fire caused the collapse of the main building and the partial collapses on both sides of the main building. Vacate orders were issued for all four affected buildings. Fire fighters searched the building for anyone inside. "As of now, there are no civilian injuries, and only one member of the service has minor injuries," FDNY Assistant Chief Kevin Brennan told reporters on the scene. Red Cross rushed to the scene to assist neighbours fleeing their homes in fear that they would also catch on fire. Just 87 months ago, the FDNY responded to the same location for an electrical fire, which was still under investigation at the time of Wednesday's fire. "Ember and ash 100 yards down the street. It was big," said neighbour Mike Barrell. Source: NBC New York, CBS New York |
