Fire breaks out at Ekurhuleni’s Simmer and Jack landfill site
A fire broke out at Ekurhuleni’s Simmer and Jack landfill site on Sunday, 15 May 2022. William Ntladi, district manager media liaison at Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), said, “The call was received at 23h20 and our response initially was a district turnout mainly Primrose, Bedfordview and Edenvale fire stations. The crews frantically battled the blaze overnight till the next morning. Four fire engines were used on the first day and strategically more resources were brought in from other districts.”
Ntladi added, “Three water tankers were brought to the scene to assist shuttling the water from a nearby fire hydrant. The fire kept on flaring up again due to strong wind. Fire fighters had challenges of dense smoke, which forced them to change attack modes time and again. Shifts and station rotational system was implemented. Each shift had to operate on site for a duration of four hours before being relieved by other crews from other stations in the same region. Currently, the crews are using three water tankers, medium pumper, major pumper and two grass unit vehicles.” “Challenges included ever-changing wind directions and shuttling water from outside the dumping site. Crews relied on heavy equipment such as caterpillars and bulldozers. No casualties recorded on scene. The cause of the fire is undetermined.” Source: William Ntladi, district manager media liaison: Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) |
