Tow truck crash on M2 east in Cleveland, Ekurhuleni, kills two
Two occupants were declared dead on scene by paramedics after their tow truck crashed against a stationary metal pole on M2 eastbound freeway next to Cleveland in the City of Ekurhuleni. William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), said, “The call was received around 17h30 on Saturday afternoon, 16 April 2022. Disaster and Emergency Management Services rescue team from the City of Ekurhuleni swiftly responded to the scene. On arrival, one patient was lying motionless on the road next to the vehicle's debris while the other was still trapped inside the remains of the vehicle. Rescuers battled in the rainy weather using extrication tools to recover the trapped patient from the badly damaged towing truck's cab. Both males of unknown ages were unfortunately declared dead on scene due to intense injuries sustained.”
Ntladi added, “The cause of the crash is undetermined; however, preliminary investigation tells that high speed might have been the cause due to the magnitude of the impact. The vehicle broke into two pieces.” Two lanes on each bound (east and west) of the freeway had to be temporarily closed for traffic.
