12 fire fighting bikes with extinguisher and siren in Mumbai
The first lot of 12 fire fighting bikes arrived at the Mumbai Fire Brigade headquarters over the weekend of 9 April 2022. This is the first time the force will get fire bikes, which are meant to act as first responders. These bikes have a water tank, fire extinguisher, siren, wireless communication gear and hose drill attached. The fire bikes have a 30-litre tank capacity and can shoot out water through a high pressure pump at eight litres per minute. In October last year, a Rs 3 crore proposal to purchase of fire fighting bikes was approved by the civic standing committee. Officials said that another set of 12 bikes are expected to arrive by the end of the month, taking the total number of bikes to 24. These will be deployed at fire stations of every civic ward.
In a congested city like Mumbai, response time to fight a blazes, especially during peak hour in traffic, is 20 to 25 minutes while the Union government mandates it to be around 6,5 minutes. The fire brigade hopes the fire bikes will, in a way, help the fire brigade improve time taken to responding to fire incidents. A senior fire official said that now they will have more teeth to deal with fire-related calls as the 12 bikes have arrived. “The response time for blazes especially during peak hours touches 20 to 25 minutes especially in suburbs while in the city area it is around 15 minutes. Therefore these bikes could reach the site first, navigating quickly through traffic if any. It will take some time before we actually begin their use on ground as the essential formalities like RTO registration and training to our fire officers who would be required,” he official said, adding that the plan is to display the bikes first at the fire safety week slated to be observed from 14 April 2022.
