Fire stations of the world: Swindon Fire Station in Wiltshire, UK
UK’s Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has 50 fire stations, each in the heart of its community and providing a vital service to local people. Swindon Fire Station, built in 1959, is situated in Drove Road, Swindon in Wiltshire and is crewed on the shift system, so there are four whole-time watches (Blue, Green, Red and White), each working two days, two nights and four days off in a pattern. There is also an on-call watch, which trains on station every Monday night. This fire station has a clothing recycling bank for the Fire Fighters Charity.
Swindon fire station hosts one of two Fire Cadet units in the north of its service area. The meeting room at this fire station is available for use by community groups and external agencies.
Appliances include two fire engines, an aerial appliance, an operational support unit and a British Red Cross emergency response unit. The station manager is Darren Nixon.

Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall visited Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) on 6 July 2020. The visit, hosted by Chief Fire Officer Ben Ansell at Swindon Fire Station, highlighted the work of the Service during the Coronavirus pandemic, including the successful partnership with South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWAST) and Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Chief Fire Officer Ben Ansell said: “It was a huge honour to welcome The Duchess of Cornwall to Swindon. I extended the invitation to her as we are very proud of the work we have done with partners across our Service area during the Coronavirus pandemic. This was a great opportunity for us to publicly acknowledge the many people, both within the Service and outside, who contribute to keeping the communities of Dorset and Wiltshire safe.”
