Panic as fuel tanker explodes along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos, Nigeria
A fuel tanker exploded along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos, Nigeria, causing panic to the motorists and pedestrians on 7 January 2021. Several cars were alight due to the spread of the fire. Fire fighters from the Lagos State Fire Service and officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority were on scene. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said the structures at the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, where a tanker explosion occurred on Thursday morning, has been “badly affected.” The tanker conveying 44 000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), crashed with another trailer loaded with iron rods and discharged its contents, which led to the fire incident. The incident happened at 9h15am opposite the Lagos State Fire Service Station located in the area, which led to a prompt intervention of the fire service personnel. Giving an update on the tanker explosion, Ibrahim Farinloye, the acting zonal coordinator, South-West Zonal Office said the road has been strongly affected. “The road structures are badly affected. Efforts are on to carry out integrity tests on them, especially the pillar of the bridge linking the Airport from Apapa – Oshodi way,” Farinloye said. Officials of the fire service successfully separated the tanker body from the cab and combated the inferno. According to Farinloye, no casualties were recorded in the incident.
