Tragic head-on collision between a scholar transport minibus and a truck claims 14 lives

The tragic scholar transport crash in Vanderbijlpark, which occurred on Monday, 19 January 2026, resulted in a total of 14 deaths after two more pupils succumbed to their injuries later in the week. The collision involved a private minibus taxi ferrying pupils and a side-tipper truck on an industrial road (R553/Golden Highway). Preliminary investigations by the South African Police Service (SAPS) suggest the 22-year-old minibus driver attempted to overtake other vehicles and collided head-on with the truck. Emergency services were alerted at approximately 06h50am.
Paramedics and rescue teams from Emfuleni Fire and Rescue Department, ER24, Netcare 911 and Provincial EMS arrived shortly after to find the Toyota Quantum taxi severely damaged and partially "cut in half" from the force of the head-on impact.
The Emfuleni Fire and Rescue Department extracted victims from the wreckage. During the cleanup and recovery operation, a 12th victim was located trapped underneath the minibus taxi. Rescue services also attended to the truck, which had veered off the road and into an embankment.
Resources on scene included Emfuleni Fire Department, GPG EMS, ER 24, Sharpmed, GPG EMS and Forensic (Sebokeng).
Medical interventions
On-site triage: 11 learners were declared dead at the scene by attending paramedics.
Critical care: Five students sustained critical injuries. One student was still breathing when emergency services arrived but tragically succumbed to their injuries while in transit to the hospital.
Air-lift operations: One critically injured learner was airlifted from the scene to a private hospital in Alberton on Monday night for specialised care.
Surviving learners were rushed to Sebokeng Hospital and Kopanong Hospital, where the Gauteng Department of Health and MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko monitored their condition.
Casualties
While 11 learners were initially declared dead at the scene, the death toll rose to 13 by Monday afternoon and eventually reached 14. The victims were from five different local schools, including El Shaddai Christian School and Oakwood Primary.
Legal action
The driver, Ayanda Dludla, appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court facing 14 counts of murder (upgraded from culpable homicide), as well as charges for reckless driving, driving an unlicensed vehicle, and driving without a Professional Driving Permit (PrDP). He abandoned his bail application.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Education MEC Matome Chiloane visited the site and affected families. The tragedy has sparked renewed calls for stricter national regulations on private scholar transport to ensure vehicle roadworthiness and driver qualifications.
Memorial and joint funeral services for the victims were held throughout the following weekend in Sebokeng.
